Web 2.0 Tutorials Round-Up

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

Sweet!!

That “Web 2.0″ look… the elusive holy grail, the new bevel, drop-shadow-du-jour, the page curl of the new millennium… But how does one get that look? Well, now we’ve got every “design” effect tutorial conveniently indexed and logged for your Photoshopping pleasure, thanks to this Smashing Magazine post.

I even put the new mod7 logo through the Web 2.0 machine. Total “design” time: 5 minutes flat!

The Machine is Us/ing Us

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University, describes the concept of Web 2.0 in under 5 minutes: Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us. Beyond breezing through the "history" and the current state of 2.0, this video deftly inspires larger concepts and questions (…but nothing new here, though).

Since I understand this space somewhat, I’m able to follow along at the brisk pace of the video. But I doubt this is an easy-1-2-3 "What is Web 2.0" walkthrough–not suitable for Joe and Jane Public.

(Thanks, Jeff, for this great link).

Zoho: Here’s a full suite of “100% free” MS Office-like online applications. Import/export common MS docs, create web-enable apps, build your own apps and widgets to extend the functionality… it’s amazing, really.

Am I ready to make the switch to complete web 2.0 100% free virtual desktops? Maybe… it’s pretty nifty, but would I trust my sensitive corporate data to their servers?

And am I out of luck during those rare times that I’m not online? Nope, they have a downloadable app version.

Desktop programs are a thing of the past, replaced by free, simple, Web-based apps that do everything from spreadsheets to e-mail–and more!

That’s the hype, anyway. But is it actually true?
